A TPMS relearn or reset is an electronic process wherein the new TPMS sensor is paired with the vehicle's tire pressure monitoring system.
In case you didn't know, the sensors or transponders are responsible for checking the pressure level in your tires. They send the data to your car's ECU, which gives you a warning if a tire is underinflated or overinflated.
But for the sensors and TPMS to communicate, they need to be paired. To be more specific, the TPMS needs to know the unique IDs of the transponders.
The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) primary function is to make the driver aware of the state of tire pressure within the wheels.
When the tire sensor indicates "low tire pressure", the TPMS system sends an RF signal to the ECU on the vehicle that determines if the pressure is below the threshold, which then will indicate a TPMS symbol or position-specific display, depending on the vehicle.
What are the procedures of TPMS relearn?
Impact to a vehicle's tyres and thus TPMS is often most likely when repairs or maintenance is undergone. Thus a TPMS reset is required using the TPMS Diagnostic Tool after any service or work has been performed.
The vehicle relearn procedure is a standard step for the TPMS service.
To clear all fault codes that might have appeared whilst working on the vehicle and to guarantee proper functionality of the system, you will be taken through the vehicle relearn procedure. This is a series of actions that allow the vehicle's ECU to see the ID's of each sensor in each wheel.
Types of TPMS relearn include:
- Trigger-relearn
- Auto-manual relearn
- Auto-self relearn
Furthermore, some vehicles may use a combination of two or more relearn types.
Indirect TPMS systems use an initialization procedure which may require a TPMS tool to figure out the steps involved to reset the system.
